St. George Island, FL — The Cape St. George Lighthouse will host its August Sunset and Full Moon Climb on Saturday, August 9, 2025. This popular event invites visitors to enjoy a spectacular evening view of St. George Island, the Gulf, and Apalachicola Bay under the glow of the setting sun and rising moon.
The climb will take place from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with climbs scheduled in 15-minute intervals. Time slots will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. No advance reservations will be accepted. Tickets must be purchased at the Lighthouse Gift Shop, which opens at 7:30 p.m. on the evening of the event, and climbers will then sign up for their time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Each time slot can accommodate up to 12 people.
Admission is $10.00 per climber for the public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Payments can be made by cash or credit card. For safety reasons, climbers must be at least 40 inches tall, and children must be 13 or older to access the exterior catwalk.
On August 9th, the sun will set at 8:25 p.m., followed by the rise of the Sturgeon Moon at 8:57 p.m. The full moon in August is traditionally called the Sturgeon Moon, named by Native American tribes—most notably the Algonquin—because of the abundance of sturgeon found in North American lakes and rivers during this time of year.
The Cape St. George Light is in St. George Lighthouse Park, at the center of St. George Island, where Island Drive ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Free parking is available on both sides of the park.
