Miccosukee History, Culture and Environmental Stewardship to Be Explored in Apalachicola Talk and Museum Exhibit

APALACHICOLA, FL — The history, culture, and continuing legacy of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida will be the focus of a free public program on Tuesday, October 27, at 5:00 p.m. at the Raney House Museum, 128 Market Street, Apalachicola.

Edward Ornstein, Esq., General Counsel and Director of the Tribe’s Tallahassee Embassy, will present Tales of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians in the Apalachicola Basin. His talk will explore the history of the Miccosukee people in North Florida, with particular attention to the Apalachicola River basin. Topics will include Miccosukee cultural values, places of historical and cultural interest, environmental stewardship, and current public policies affecting the Tribe.

Following the presentation, Ornstein will lead a preview tour of “Miccosukee: Art, Identity & Continuity,” a month-long exhibit of Miccosukee crafts and artifacts at the Raney House Museum. The exhibit offers visitors an opportunity to learn more about the Tribe’s artistic traditions, cultural identity, and enduring connections to the region.

The October 27 program includes an opening reception and advance viewing of the exhibit. The exhibit will open to the general public the following day.

Both the talk and the exhibit preview are free and open to the public.

The program is part of the Apalachicola Area Historical Society’s speaker series and is presented by the Society with support from the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

Community members and visitors are invited to attend this opportunity to learn about the Miccosukee people and their history, culture, and relationship with the Apalachicola River basin.
