The sun will set at 6:11p.m. and the “Wolf” moon will rise at 6:12 p.m. on January 25th. The January full moon is called the Wolf moon because wolves often hunt at night and the howling of wolves could be heard outside Indian villages. As such, their howling became associated with nightfall and particularly, the moon amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter. Thus, the name for January’s full moon. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes, most notably the Algonquin, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons.
The Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park.
