SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Honoring our African American Servicemembers
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit in recognition of Black History Month honoring  the service of African-American servicemembers in WWII. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, February 3\, 2026 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, February 28\, 2026. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET and there is no charge for admission. \n  \nAfrican Americans served in large numbers during WWII despite being denied full rights as American citizens. They served in segregated units in both the Army and the Army Air Corps\, one of the most recognizable being the Tuskegee Airmen. Many African American soldiers trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in transportation units such as Amphibious Truck Companies\, where support units often worked close to combat and came under fire. \n  \nAt Camp Gordon Johnston\, these Amphibious Truck Companies trained in the use of the amphibious truck known as the DUKW\, using the bay and sandy beaches in Carrabelle and all along the Forgotten Coast to practice operating\, loading and unloading these truly amphibious vehicles. The Museum continues its research into the units that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in Carrabelle and served in World War II including being part of the campaign on Iwo Jima. \n  \nThis exhibit will share what has been uncovered about these servicemen who\, like many African Americans of the era\, served their country with honor in a still-segregated military and faced significant challenges along the way. \n  \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. SUMMARY:Carrabelle History Museum’s Speaker Program:  History\, Culture\, and Stories of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Florida
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting a fascinating speaker program about the History\, Culture\, and Stories of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Florida on Saturday\, January 17\, 2026\, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm ET at C-Quarters Marina\, 501 St James Ave (Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, FL. This program will feature Misty Penton\, Bio Archeologist\, Muscogee/Creek Storyteller and Tradition Keeper\, Education Director of the Fred George Museum\, and founder of the Wildwood Preservation Society. There is no charge for this event. \n  \nAt this session\, Misty will discuss the rich history\, culture\, and stories of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Florida\, a people whose resilience has endured despite the hardships of the Trail of Tears and centuries of efforts to erase their identity. Learn how small groups avoided removal by hiding in the swamps of North Florida\, preserving their traditions through strength and secrecy. Misty will share the enduring legacy of Ekvnv Hvtke Tvlwv (White Earth Tribal Town) located at nearby Blountstown\, FL—the only ceremonial square grounds east of the Mississippi with unbroken ceremonies since prehistoric times. Discover the sacred art of shell carving\, a tradition dating back to the Mississippian era\, and explore how generational storytelling\, oral traditions\, and sacred ceremonies continue to guide and sustain the Muscogee people today. Through Misty’s presentation\, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the enduring spirit of the Muscogee people and their unbroken connection to the land\, culture\, and ancestors. \n  \nMisty Penton is the Tradition Keeper and Storyteller for the Muscogee Nation of Florida and serves as the Education Director for The Museum at Fred George Park and Greenway in Tallahassee\, operated by the Wildwood Preservation Society. She also works as the Museum Director/Curator for the Muscogee Nation of Florida and an Education Specialist at WFSU Public Media. Penton holds a Master of Science degree in Physical and Biological Anthropology from the University of Oregon and two Bachelor of Science degrees in Political Science and Anthropology from Florida State University. She grew up near the land that is now Leon County’s Fred George Park and Greenway and helped create a coalition to help found the new county park. \n  \nThere is no fee for this program but donations are gladly accepted to defray costs. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Stories in Glass - A Vintage Bottle Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is pleased to announce a special display featuring vintage bottles of the Forgotten Coast. This exhibit will be on display from Wednesday\, October 1 through Sunday\, December 28. This unique exhibit will showcase a wide variety of interesting and historical bottles that tell the story of Franklin County’s heritage\, industry\, and everyday life. Visitors can explore this special exhibit on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET\, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET\, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free\, with donations warmly welcomed. \n  \nThe display will feature Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery bottle\, found on nearby St. Vincent Island\, once part of the estate of Dr. Raymond V. Pierce\, a physician and patent medicine maker. His products\, such as Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription\, Golden Medical Discovery\, and Pleasant Pellets\, made him a millionaire\, with nearly a million bottles shipped each year. He also founded the Pierce Glass Company\, which produced bottles for his own medicines and brands like Pond’s Extract and Lydia Pinkham. In 1907\, he purchased St. Vincent Island in Franklin County\, where he built a private preserve with roads\, cottages\, and imported game animals\, until his death on the island in 1914. \n  \nOther highlights of the exhibit include Coca-Cola bottles bottled locally in Apalachicola. The Apalachicola Coca-Cola Bottling Plant\, in operation through the late 1970s\, is remembered for its classic green glass bottles embossed with “Apalachicola\, FLA” on the bottom. Today\, these bottles are sought-after collectibles. \n  \nAlso on display are bottles from the shipwrecked SS Tarpon\, including cherry bottles and beer bottles. Visitors will also see medicine bottles once used by local midwife Tillie Miller\, local milk bottles\, as well as perfume bottles\, and other rare glass finds. All of which provide a glimpse into past daily life in Franklin County. \n  \nThe Carrabelle History Museum is located at 106 SE Avenue B\, in historic downtown Carrabelle\, FL. DESCRIPTION:Carrabelle’s three museums will open their doors free of charge on Saturday\, September 20 as part of the annual Museum Day celebration. In honor of this day\, Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum\, Carrabelle History Museum\, and Crooked River Lighthouse Museum invite you to Carrabelle FL for special activities and exhibits. Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will be open from 11 am – 5 pm. Carrabelle History Museum will be open from 10 am – 5 pm. Crooked River Lighthouse will be open from 9 am – 5 pm. Guests can also enjoy the Country Farmer’s Market from 9 am-1 pm at Crooked River Lighthouse Park with local crafts\, baked goods and area produce. \n  \nEach year\, Museum Day goes beyond getting visitors through museum doors; it shines a spotlight on incredible culture and history exhibits. This year’s theme\, “Signals & Stories: Communication Across Time” will explore flashing beacons\, radio calls\, whispered tales and the signals that shaped our community and beyond. Each of Carrabelle’s museums will commemorate the theme with their own focus. Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will feature wartime communication through radio signals\, codes\, and stories of those who trained at Camp Gordon Johnston. Crooked River Lighthouse will highlight maritime signals like daymarks\, semaphore flags and light signals. The Carrabelle History Museum will focus on storytelling through personal stories\, community signals\, and vintage postcards. \nGuests can take part in hands-on activities and discover how these signals reveal cultural traditions and  military valor. From lighthouse beams to military radios to family stories\, the Forgotten Coast has long relied on signals to carry meaning across time.
