Historical Speaker Kent Thompson
Historian and prolific author J. Kent Thompson will speak at the Raney Carriage House on May 20 at 4PM. This is the third of the Apalachicola Area Historical Society’s spring Speaker Series. March featured Winston Chester, and April offered David Fowler. Both have been excellent talks. Kent is an avid researcher of the area and his book “Remembering Florida’s Forgotten Coast” published in 2015 is only one of his many publications, including his new fiction offerings. Early Explorers of Apalachicola Bay & St George Island
Many seafaring Spaniards sailed the coast of the northern Gulf, but since they had not found gold, the land was of little interest. The first recognizable map of Apalachicola Bay was drawn in 1696, although an island presumed to be St George was noted by a sea captain in 1693. In 1722 a priest set foot on the island after a shipwreck. Americans have adopted the names from the maps of Vicente Pintado around 1815.

AAHS Spring Speaker Series: Margo Springfield Historic Cemetery Preservation
Rescheduled from 2020: Margo Springfield from the University of West Florida will discuss Historic Cemetery Preservation, with focus on Chestnut Cemetery in Apalachicola. Margo Springfield has worked extensively on historic cemetery preservation in Pensacola, and will bring her expertise to us, for work on the historic Chestnut Street Cemetery in Apalachicola.

AAHS Speaker Series featuring Kevin Bair
