SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Battle of Iwo Jima
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit about the Battle of Iwo Jima. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, March 3 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, March 28\, 2026. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET and there is no charge for admission. \n  \nThe Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the most important and hardest-fought amphibious battles of World War II. From February 19 to March 26\, 1945\, American forces attacked the small\, heavily defended island to secure its airfields and use them to support bombing missions against Japan. Marines from the 3rd\, 4th\, and 5th Marine Divisions landed on narrow beaches under heavy artillery\, mortar\, and small arms fire and quickly faced fierce resistance. Japanese troops were dug into bunkers\, caves\, and tunnels\, making every step forward dangerous. The battle was one of the bloodiest in the Pacific\, with nearly 7\,000 Americans killed and many more wounded.  After weeks of hard combat\, the island was secured and the famous flag raising on Mount Suribachi became a powerful symbol of courage and sacrifice. \n  \nAlthough Marines led the assault\, many Army and Navy units played key support roles. The U.S. Army’s 147th Infantry Regiment helped clear the island\, and Navy Seabees repaired airfields so planes could quickly use them. Among them were several Amphibious Truck Companies—the 471st\, 473rd\, and 476th— that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston. Landing under fire\, they moved supplies\, carried ammunition\, rescued stranded equipment\, and evacuated wounded soldiers from the beaches using DUKW amphibious vehicles. These units served alongside the 4th Marine Division and took part in heavy fighting. Throughout the month\, the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will have a special exhibit commemorating the anniversary of the Iwo Jima Battle. Displays will include photos\, video\, and artifacts including some from the Marine Corps. \n  \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries (FFCPL) announces a week filled with creativity\, connection\, and community at the Eastpoint and Carrabelle Branches of the Franklin County Public Libraries through  their popular Program Series. Library programs are free and open to the public with no library card required. \n  \nSt. Patrick’s Day Storytime will be held on Monday\, March 16 at 1:30 PM at the Eastpoint Branch. At this magical St. Patrick’s Day celebration\, kids will enjoy a storytime featuring Jamie O’Rourke & the Big Potato: An Irish Folktale by Tomie DePaola\, which will be brought to life with Novel Effect soundscapes. After the story\, children can enjoy a fun St. Patrick’s Day activity to keep the luck of the Irish going! This session is perfect for preschool & early elementary ages and all families are welcome. \n  \nA Tech Class is scheduled for Tuesday\, March 17 at 10:30 AM at the Eastpoint Branch. This hands-on tech class helps participants build digital confidence on smartphones\, tablets and laptops. Patrons can get help with social media questions (Facebook\, Instagram)\, email setup and password help\, downloading apps safely\, library apps\, digital resources\, and privacy and scam awareness basics. Registration is encouraged. \n  \nThe Writer’s Forum meets on Wednesday\, March 18 at 1 PM at the Eastpoint Branch. Attendees are welcome to share their work\, get inspired\, and connect with fellow writers. Writers of all genres and experience levels are invited. \n  \nA Pipe Cleaner Flowers craft workshop will take place on Friday\, March 20 at 12:30 PM at the Carrabelle Branch. At this workshop\, guests will create pipe cleaner flowers\, a fun and easy craft that allows for endless creativity! This easy hands-on program will be provided in a fun\, welcoming setting. \n  \nDIY Windchimes\, a hands-on craft program where patrons can design and create their very own wind chime using colorful pony beads and other decorative materials. Guests can mix\, match\, and pattern beads to create something bright\, bold\, and unique. The program will be offered on Friday\, March 20 at 2:00 PM at the Eastpoint Branch. \n  \nThese programs are supported by the Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries\, a 501(c)(3) organization that supports the Eastpoint and Carrabelle branches. SUMMARY:Artists Capture the Coast During Forgotten Coast en Plein Air
DESCRIPTION:Beaches\, lighthouses\, bayous\, pine forests\, palm trees\, fishing villages and vessels\, and historic small-town Southern architecture: The Forgotten Coast en Plein Air offers a dramatic array of inspiring settings. Located along a 100-mile stretch of scenic coastal towns on the Gulf in North Florida\, this 10-day invitational event takes place from March 20–29\, 2026\, bringing world-class plein air artists together to paint across eight Forgotten Coast communities. Now in its 21st year\, the event offers residents and visitors an interactive arts experience and kicks off with the popular Quickdraw paintout\, where artists capture the beauty of the region in real time. The Quickdraw will be judged by celebrated contemporary impressionist Lori Putnam\, an award-winning oil painter and Master Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America (OPAM) whose expressive works\, which are shaped by painting and teaching in more than 30 countries\, are exhibited and collected worldwide. \n  \nActivities take place every day throughout the event and include painting demonstrations\, lunch and learns\, wetroom\, gala\, painting stations with plein air artists\, Student Art Day\, and a plein air gospel service on the waterfront. Student Art Day\, a cherished highlight of the event since 2007\, pairs selected Gulf and Franklin County students one-on-one with artists to create plein air paintings. The students’ work will be exhibited March 25–29 at The Joe Center for the Arts in Port St. Joe. All demonstrations and receptions are free and open to the public.
